It was Tanemura who first taught him Ninjutsu for 4 weeks at his farm in 1975. And when he went to Japan his first real major influence was not Hatsumi.It was Tanemura.Several Dan's in Tang Soo Do before he ever went to japan.A burning desire from his university days to learn eastern philosophy.Performing art Major from Miami University.I think that its really important to bear in mind Haye's Background Well technically To Shin do is his improvement or attempt to modernise/re conceptualise what he learned in the late 70's in what was the proto -Bujinkan.Which caused him to create To-Shin do, but did he do anything to improve on what he learned from the Bujinkan? Yes, but not for the reasons that most people think.He obviously had some type of break from Hatsumi Er No, there are plenty of American Bujinkan instructors who are legit, and possibly have overtaken hayes as authorities in togakure ryu, simply by virtue of studying with Hatsumi for longer.So obviously, Stephen K Hayes is the authority on Ninjas in America, being one of the only legit instructors in a style which has more phony ones then legit ones( see Dux, Frank).
